Hitchhiking
REMEMBER: “Hitchhiking” refers to getting a ride from anyone you do not know well, even if you have chatted with that person for an evening in a bar or at a party or if you have a mutual acquaintance. The most important recommendation in this area is DO NOT HITCHHIKE!!!
If you do, for some reason, hitchhike:
- It is not advisable for women to accept rides with men they do not know well. DO NOT accept rides when there are two or more men you do not know well.
- Do not be afraid to refuse a ride.
- Do not get into the back seat of a car if there is someone already there.
- If you do, against advice, accept a ride from a man who is alone, sit in the front where you are in a position to grab the steering wheel and, possibly, the brake.
- If you accept a ride from two people who are sitting in the front seat, sit in the back behind the driver, to avoid having the passenger in the front seat grab you should you need to escape.
- If you sense danger at all, calmly and carefully plan your escape. The car must stop at some time. Carry your keys or some other object in your hands--for a weapon. If escape is not possible without a confrontation, be prepared mentally and physically.
- When accepting a ride, ask the driver’s destination before giving yours. If he refuses, do not take the ride. In fact, never let a ‘hitchhike driver’ take you directly to your home or business. Instead, get out at a neutral site.
- If you have a cell phone, always carry it with you. Be sure it is turned on and that you have the 911 emergency number programmed so you can access it with the touch of one button.
- Please DO NOT HITCHHIKE!!!
