Build your strength and embrace the joy of movement! BALANCE is pleased to once again partner with VIBE Arts to provide our in-demand Musical Theatre Movement Workshop.

Join us for 60 minutes of toe-tapping, moving, and grooving in a dance-based fitness class! We will work every major muscle group and allow for modifications for all levels and abilities. Classic tunes with a musical theatre theme will bring you and your muscles back in time as we show tune it up together!

The 10-week movement workshop will run Monday afternoons from 1:30 pm-2:30 pm, starting March 18th until June 10th (with no classes on following Mondays: Easter Monday, April 1st, April 22nd and Victoria Day long weekend on May 20th) at West Neighbourhood House located at 248 Ossington Avenue (Ossington & Dundas). Are you dealing with issues related to living as a blind person in a sighted world? Do you need to receive insight from others going through the same things? Are you wanting to support and share with others dealing with sight loss challenges or challenges imposed by our city and society? We are here to help.

This group is a year-round, professionally facilitated group counselling for adults who are blind or living with vision loss. Registration opens 3 times/year only. Together, the group addresses life changes and challenges specifically for blind people, in a safe and supportive group experience.

10:30 am: Think Outside the Ring! A Safe Recreational Boxing Program with Savoy Howe

BALANCE for Blind Adults and Toronto Newsgirls is pleased to present 'Think Outside the Ring'--a series of safe, recreational and adapted boxing program that introduces Boxing 101 through the four components of boxing: offence / defense / grounding / footwork. Over the 6 weeks, participants will have the opportunity to safely explore a variety of techniques from each component, that can also be used as a form of self-defense outside of a boxing ring.

6:30 pm: Evening Sharing Space Support Group

Recognizing the difficulties of attending our current Sharing Space Support Group* for those with employment, enrolled in school or volunteering their time during daytime working hours, BALANCE is pleased to announce a new (evening) Sharing Space Support Group! Together, the group addresses life changes and challenges specifically for blind people, in a safe and supportive group experience.

This group is facilitated by Melanie Marsden, BSW, RSW. With lived experience of blindness, and a registered member of the Alderville First Nation (Ojibwaybear Clan) and (Mohawk Turtle Clan 6 nations Brantford, Ontario) Melanie brings a fresh perspective and will be of particular help to those living with challenges related to intersecting identities. This new group is offered virtually through Zoom, Wednesdays from 6:30 PM -8:30 PM. Also employed full-time during the day, Melanie is an Addiction and Mental Health Counsellor at Anishnawbe Health Toronto and is eager to facilitate our new evening SSSG at BALANCE.

This program offers a 10-week professionally facilitated group counseling opportunity for adults with visual disabilities. Together, participants will explore various aspects of living with partial sight or blindness, delve into identity formation amidst visual challenges, assess support networks from friends and family, navigate the process of grief and letting go, manage feelings of stress and overwhelm, and celebrate personal achievements. Lisa Derencinovic, MSW, a professional counsellor with lived experience of blindness, leads the group. Lisa has provided therapeutic counseling at BALANCE for the past 7 years.

“If My Vision [Acuity] is So Good, Why Can’t I …?” Using Low Vision Assessment to Explore Client-Identified Challenges and Possible Solutions with Julia Foster, OT.

This interactive, case-based presentation will explore low vision assessment, specifically:

  • The role of the low vision assessment (LVA) in the continuum of eye health care and low vision/blindness rehabilitation
  •  Components of low vision rehabilitation assessment
  • Case scenarios that explore applying LVA results to:
    • Connect visual function with client-identified concerns
    • Inform education to clients/families
    • Shape a rehabilitation plan and identify potential low vision aids/strategies
  • Questions to reflect on your connection to low vision/blindness rehabilitation
