1:30 pm: Musical Theatre Movement Workshop Spring 2024

Build your strength and embrace the joy of movement! BALANCE is pleased to once again partner with VIBE Arts to provide our in-demand Musical Theatre Movement Workshop.

Join us for 60 minutes of toe-tapping, moving, and grooving in a dance-based fitness class! We will work every major muscle group and allow for modifications for all levels and abilities. Classic tunes with a musical theatre theme will bring you and your muscles back in time as we show tune it up together!

The 10-week movement workshop will run Monday afternoons from 1:30 pm-2:30 pm, starting March 18th until June 10th (with no classes on following Mondays: Easter Monday, April 1st, April 22nd and Victoria Day long weekend on May 20th) at West Neighbourhood House located at 248 Ossington Avenue (Ossington & Dundas). 1:30 pm: Sharing Space Support Group Spring 2024

This program offers a 10-week professionally facilitated group counseling opportunity for adults with visual disabilities. Together, participants will explore various aspects of living with partial sight or blindness, delve into identity formation amidst visual challenges, assess support networks from friends and family, navigate the process of grief and letting go, manage feelings of stress and overwhelm, and celebrate personal achievements. Lisa Derencinovic, MSW, a professional counsellor with lived experience of blindness, leads the group. Lisa has provided therapeutic counseling at BALANCE for the past 7 years.

7:00 pm: Low Vision Speaker Series: “Custom Prosthetic Eyes – Everyone is Unique” with Andra Striowski

Join us to hear ocularist Andra Striowski describe the creation of custom-fit, handcrafted prosthetic eyes. Witness the transformation of medical necessity into a personalized work of art, as Andra takes you through the meticulous process of crafting these unique devices. Through real-life cases, you’ll see how an ocularist adapts the shape of the prosthesis to manage various orbital disorders. You’ll gain insights into the challenges and triumphs of mitigating conditions like lid entropion, ptosis, and proptosis. Come and learn how such services can make a difference in the lives of your patients.

6:30 pm: Stress Management and Resilience Workshop- Spring 2024

This 7-week program caters exclusively to BALANCE clients.  Social Worker and BALANCE counsellor Melanie Marsden facilitates the workshop series. Melanie specializes in intersecting identities in counselling and is an experienced counsellor with lived experience of sight loss.  In this workshop, participants will learn fundamental mental health skills tailored to individuals with visual disabilities. Each 2-hour workshop builds on the next, covering topics such as understanding stress, mindfulness, reframing negative thoughts, assertiveness, and resilience.
