10:00 am: Boxing: The Knockout Collective

June 5, 2026

Program Details

  • Date: Fridays, May 1 – June 5, 2026
  • Time: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
  • Location: United Boxing Club – 1034 Bloor St. W. (Steps from Dufferin Station)

BALANCE undertook a pilot program last fall that saw our popular boxing classes move into a fully equipped boxing gym. After the success of the program, which was featured in the Globe and Mail in early 2026, we’re delighted to announce its return for the spring! This six-week program gives Blind and low-vision adults the chance to train in a state-of-the-art, centrally located and inclusive space under the guidance of Savoy Howe from Toronto Newsgirls Boxing Club.

You’ll build solid boxing fundamentals — footwork, punch combinations, offense, and defense — while improving strength, coordination, fitness, and confidence. Beyond technique, the program helps you step into your own unique boxing style in a safe, supportive, and empowering environment.

One participant said:
"Boxing makes me feel calmer and more confident. It’s the BEST anti-depressant, and I always leave class with a huge smile on my face."

Check out The Globe and Mail’s coverage of last fall’s program in “What I Learned Boxing With the Blind."

What to Bring: Comfortable workout clothes, clean indoor shoes, water, and your fighter spirit.

Spots are limited. Reserve your spot by emailing info@balancefba.org or by calling 416-236-1796 ext. 0.

Step into the ring, build your skills, and have fun — it’s your knockout moment!

Please note: By registering, you consent to BALANCE for Blind Adults using photographs and/or video recordings in which you may appear for promotional, educational, and internal purposes (for example: on our website, social media, printed materials). 1:30 pm: Finding Your Way: Navigating Your Thoughts and Feelings about Orientation and Mobility

June 24, 2026

  • Wednesday, June 24 | 1:30–3:00 PM (90 minutes)

Orientation and mobility is about far more than learning routes or techniques for travel — it is also connected to identity, confidence, independence, and adjustment. For many people living with partial sight or blindness, the white cane can carry multiple meanings, representing both challenge and empowerment.

Co-facilitated by Bill Phung, Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist and Lisa Derencinovic, Social Worker, this reflective workshop will explore the emotional and psychological experiences connected to orientation and mobility.

Together, we will discuss:

  • the symbolism of the white cane
  • the different feelings that can arise while navigating the world independently
  • the challenges and successes of learning a new skill

Through real-life orientation and mobility scenarios, participants will explore practical strategies for managing frustration, anxiety, and uncertainty — both on and off route — while building greater self-awareness, resilience, and confidence.
