Accessible Therapeutic Chi Kung & Tai Chi Foundations

Featuring adapted practices from Wang’s 24-Posture Therapeutic Chi Kung

BALANCE for Blind Adults is pleased to introduce a new six-week workshop pilot combining therapeutic Chi Kung practice with foundational Tai Chi principles, designed specifically for adults who are blind or have low vision.

  • Date: Tuesdays, November 10 – December 15
  • Time: 10:00–11:30 a.m.
  • Location: Downsview Hub, 70 Canuck Ave.

Through gentle, mindful movement, participants will explore breathing, posture, body awareness, weight shifting, balance, coordination, relaxation, and mindful movement. All instruction will be adapted to participants’ abilities and safety needs through clear verbal instruction, body-reference and directional cues, repetition, and accessible movement modifications.

What to Expect
The core Chi Kung practice will be based on Wang’s 24-Posture Therapeutic Chi Kung. Rather than focusing on learning a complicated form, the program will select and adapt appropriate movements from the 24-posture system according to participants’ abilities and safety needs.

Tai Chi foundations will complement the Chi Kung practice through basic principles such as posture and alignment, controlled weight transfer, stability, coordinated movement, and awareness of the body in space.

The workshop will be facilitated by Dandan Diane Wang, R.TCMP, R.Ac., RMT, Tai Chi & Therapeutic Chi Kung Instructor and fourth-generation lineage holder of Wang’s Therapeutic Chi-Kung.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn gentle therapeutic Chi Kung movements adapted to individual abilities.
  • Explore foundational Tai Chi principles, including posture, alignment, and controlled weight shifting.
  • Develop greater awareness of breathing, posture, movement, and body alignment.
  • Explore movement practices that support balance, coordination, flexibility, stability, and ease of movement.
  • Explore techniques for relaxation, stress reduction, and mindful awareness.
  • Build confidence in incorporating simple movement and breathing practices into daily life.
  • Experience the benefits of moving in a supportive and inclusive group environment.

No previous Chi Kung or Tai Chi experience is required. Whether you are completely new to these practices or have some previous experience, the workshop is designed to encourage gentle movement, relaxation, and connection at your own pace.

Come join us and discover how breath, movement, and mindfulness can help bring greater balance to your day! Register by emailing info@balancefba.org or calling 416-236-1796 ext 0.

Sight loss, whether abrupt or gradual, can be a traumatic development in a person's life, and can bring with it feelings of despair, terror, depression, anger, total numbness — or a tangled mess of all of these. In this six-week workshop, you'll learn to use creative writing to name, manage, process, and share whichever feelings are burning brightest for you right now.

  • Dates: Tuesdays, October 20 – November 24, 2026
  • Duration: 6 weeks
  • Time: 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM (EST)
  • Location: Zoom

The workshop will involve six classes. Each will involve a short teaching component, time for creative writing prompts and exercises, and time for sharing your writing and giving and receiving feedback from the group. You can expect an intentionally small and intimate group, total confidentiality, and space and sensitivity for however you need to show up each week. All emotions are welcome here, and no previous writing experience is needed.

Your instructor is Sophie Kohn, a creative nonfiction writer and instructor who's certified in trauma-informed art therapy. Please note that there's never any pressure or expectation to share anything you've written, and all writing exercises are easily modifiable if you'd prefer to record your thoughts via voice memo. Balance will have counsellors available to help if this class stirs up any difficult emotional reactions or if you just need some extra support.

In this workshop, you can expect to:

  • Better understand how the destabilizing and disorienting nature of vision loss can manifest as emotional and even physical distress;

Balance will have counsellors available to help if this class stirs up any difficult emotional reactions or if you just need some extra support.

In this workshop, you can expect to:

  • Better understand how the destabilizing and disorienting nature of vision loss can manifest as emotional and even physical distress;
  • Learn some strategies for coping with your body's particular response to vision loss;
  • Participate in six creative writing sessions that will help you name, own, feel, and make sense of your emotions;
  • Participate in an ongoing writing workshop where you both give and receive support, feedback, and suggestions from the group
  • Leave with some ideas about how to make creative writing a regular therapeutic practice in your daily life.

Meet Your Instructor: Gil Dodick
Gil has been a certified personal trainer for more than 15 years and has been living with sight loss since his teens. As his sight has decreased over the past seven years, he has shifted his focus to working exclusively with people with disabilities. Fitness has played an important role in Gil's life, helping him build strength, confidence, and independence. He believes being blind or partially sighted does not have to be a barrier to being active and taking care of yourself.

Through this program, Gil hopes to create a supportive and enjoyable space where participants can move, get stronger, learn from one another, and explore different aspects of living a healthy and active life.

No matter your current fitness level, come as you are and move at your own pace. Come ready to move, connect, and discover your strength!

Space is limited, so register early! To register, please email info@balancefba.org or call (416) 236-1796 ext. 0.
