Work doesn’t stop because vision changes

For people who are blind or partially sighted, finding work – and keeping it – isn’t always straightforward.

The expectations on the job don’t change – deadlines, meetings, systems, and collaboration.

But too often, uncertainty about how the job can be done shifts the conversation away from the work itself and onto perceived barriers.

WorkingBlind.ca Leaving balancefba.org, going to workingblind.ca keeps the focus on how work actually gets done, and what it takes to do it well.

Through short, documentary-style videos and clear guidance and resources, it grounds that understanding in real roles and real situations: how tools are used, how people approach their work, how that work is communicated clearly to others, and how it can be supported in real workplace settings.

This initiative grew out of BALANCE for Blind Adults’ ongoing work with jobseekers and employment service providers, where the need for clear, practical examples, not just explanations, came up again and again.

Why it matters

For people who are blind or partially sighted, employment isn’t shaped by ability alone.

It’s shaped by how well others understand what working with vision loss actually involves, and that understanding isn’t always there.

WorkingBlind.ca helps close that gap.

It gives people something to draw on in real situations – whether they’re preparing for work, explaining how they work, hiring, or supporting someone through the employment process.

Instead of starting from scratch each time, the site builds knowledge, supports clearer communication, and helps move conversations forward.
