From Frustration to Funny: Writing Satire and Humour
–
February 9, 2026
Feeling frustrated, angry or amused by how dysfunctional society can be here in 2026? A satire and humour writing workshop is a fantastic way to channel those feelings into hilarity, community, and catharsis. The workshop is led by Sophie Kohn, an award-winning writer and longtime CBC Radio head writer whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, McSweeney’s, Reader’s Digest, and The Globe and Mail. She currently teaches satire and humour writing for Second City and brings a sharp, compassionate, and inclusive approach to comedy.
In this class, you'll learn to write short satirical articles in the style of The Onion, McSweeney's, and The Beaverton. Whether you want to skewer the government, call out ableism, rant about people who don’t pick up after their dogs, take on Christmas music, or the anti-aging industry, this workshop will give you the tools to do it well.
You’ll leave with a strong understanding of what makes satire work, how to generate compelling story ideas, and how to turn them into pieces that make people laugh—while also nudging them to see the world a little differently. Expect plenty of laughs, meaningful connection, and catharsis.
