6:30 pm: Sharing Space Support GroupJune 7, 2021 – zoom The BALANCE Sharing Space Support Group is year-round professionally facilitated group counselling for adults who are blind or living with sight loss. From navigating during the pandemic to navigating ableism at any time, the groups address life’s challenges specifically for blind people, whether big or small, in a safe and supportive group experience (currently offered virtually through Zoom). Our Sharing Space Support Groups are facilitated by people with lived experience and a Social Work background. This is open only to BALANCE clients. 1:00 pm: Good Vibrations WorkshopJune 9, 2021 – zoom How often do you rely on your voice to communicate your ideas, express who you are, connect with others? The human voice is more significant and more miraculous than we know. In Good Vibrations you will begin to understand how the voice works, recognise your own vocal potential, relax and open your breathing, feel the joy of sound vibrations and even speak a little Shakespeare (you can do it!). This workshop is for all levels but will focus on the fundamentals of breath, resonance, speech and freeing your unique voice. And, we’ll have fun! This weekly workshop will run Wednesdays from 1-2pm, starting May 19th until June 16th. This class is currently full; please call BALANCE for information on additional dates. 7:00 pm: Stay Safe! A Comprehensive Violence Prevention Program for Blind and Partially Sighted AdultsJune 9, 2021 – zoom What images or concepts come to mind when you think of self-defense? Perhaps Mixed Martial Arts? Kicking and punching? Do you associate it with a particular experience? Or perhaps it conjures feelings of fear, empowerment or apprehension? For many of us, self-defense is not a part of everyday life, and is a concept or experience that can be shrouded in misconceptions. BALANCE is excited to partner with self-defense instructor and violence prevention specialist Alexis Fabricius in a 5-part course that will aim to shed light on the many misconceptions we may hold (and not even know it!). This course will cover some of the basics of self-defense, but will include additional skills like verbal de-escalation and practicing evaluative techniques in threatening scenarios, while also exploring topics such as violence against the blind and partially sighted, challenging vulnerability and responding to disablism/ableism. This course will encourage honest discussions about personal safety and violence, in a safe space that is inclusive and open to all. Dates: Wednesday, June 9, 16, 23, 30, July 7 from 7-8:30pm. |

Hosted by volunteers Olivia and Windy, this social group is a chance for us to gather, meet new people, share how you’re feeling, and to chat with others in the community. 7:00 pm: The Adventure Zone: An Interactive Dungeons and Dragons Role Playing GameJune 11, 2021 – zoom Join this interactive fantasy board game group where storytelling and single-character play, set on a loosely medieval world, will take you on the adventure of a lifetime! This group will run every Friday evenings, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm, and will allow you to meet new people and develop your soft-skills. No previous experience or knowledge necessary, all you need to bring is your imagination and have either a phone or computer to connect to Zoom.
