    Communication is Key! A BALANCE Workshop Series

    Do you sometimes feel misunderstood? Do you lack confidence when communicating in a group? Do you sometimes wish you could say things better or differently? Do you want to be a better listener?

    This course will reduce communication-related stress and provide you with the opportunity to practice and build skills in a safe setting. You’ll learn assertive communication, self-advocacy strategies, active listening and how to give and receive feedback. At the end of the program, you will be able to apply your new skills in your everyday life and more actively engage in the activities that are important to you.

    This workshop is available to BALANCE clients only.

Hosted by 2 wonderful volunteers, this social group is a chance for people to gather, make new acquaintances, share how you’re feeling, and to chat with others in the community.     Many of us are familiar with the discomfort that comes from stubborn or chronic neck and back pain. Did you know that yoga can offer corrective and rehabilitative support to help you? Certified advanced yoga instructor Fazia Ackbarali, leads classes with a focus on back care, pain reduction, and corrective posture. Fazia takes the time to offer 1-on-1 instruction to participants during the sessions and encourages feedback and questions throughout; the result is a supportive learning environment where peers learn from each other as well as the instructor!  

    This is an 8 week virtual course. Classes are bi-weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3pm and are 45 minutes long.

This group will run every Friday evenings, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm, and will allow you to meet new people and develop your soft-skills. No previous experience or knowledge necessary, all you need to bring is your imagination and have either a phone or computer to connect to Zoom.

    Power Hour with Mark Mangabay

    If you have been wanting to start exercising but aren’t sure where to begin, join Personal Trainer and Occupational Therapy Assistant Mark Mangabay for our Power Hour!

    This session will include 30 – 45 minutes of exercise to uplift your mood and get you sweating, as well as tips on exercising safely in the home and a Q&A portion for all things fitness!  Set to upbeat music, this workout will start with a light warm up, followed by gentle dynamic stretching, upper and lower body strengthening exercises and finish off with gentle static stretching.

    The BALANCE Sharing Space Support Group is year-round professionally facilitated group counselling for adults who are blind or living with sight loss. From navigating the challenges of the pandemic to navigating ableism at any time, this group address' life challenges specifically for blind people, whether big or small, in a safe and supportive group experience (currently offered virtually through Zoom). Our Sharing Space Support Group is facilitated by a registered Social Worker with lived experience.

    Music Appreciation: The Evolution of Recorded Music

    This music-discussion group will explore “The Evolution of Recorded Music”, examining how music has been recorded through the decades. Using original multi-track recordings, instructor Dan Minchom will break down and discuss the ever-evolving techniques, tricks and technologies that allow music to sound the way it does today. We’ll also look at interesting stories of famous artists who broke the mould and set new standards for recorded music and discuss how their creativity changed audio forever. Pro Tip: Dan suggests the use of headphones for an optimal listening experience!

    Beyond Siri- Getting to Know Your iPhone: The Podcast Player

    This class is for both those who are new to iPhone as well as those looking to improve their knowledge and use of the device. The purpose of these sessions is to provide a setting in which uncertainty regarding the use of or changes to specific apps can be discussed in greater detail.

    Our first class of the series will explore the Podcast Player. Whether you are wishing to learn something new, wanting to stay informed with current news and events, or just require some relaxing entertainment, podcasts will fill this void. We will explain how to use Podcasts, the podcast player that comes preinstalled with every iPhone/iPad.

    Learn how to:

    • use the Search and Browse tabs to locate podcast feeds,
    • subscribe/unsubscribe to them,
    • use the library and the various controls within,
    • the difference between the Mini Player and the Now Playing screens, and,
    • how to customize download settings.
